2414002070_b1d9036cd6Just a few days ago, my friend Justin Smith and the great team at Inside Facebook reported that Facebook has indeed crossed the 250 million member mark, adding 100 million members in just the last six months.  Malcom Gladwell might say that Facebook has crossed that “tipping point” in the last couple of years to truly become the standard social networking platform.  Steven Strogatz, an applied mathematician who wrote the book Sync, calls this kind of phenomenon, spontaneous order.  In spontaneous order, Strogatz explained, animate and even inanimate objects sync up together in ways that seem unpredictable and inexplicable.  What kind of force lies behind the new spontaneous order we’re seeing in Facebook?
